I Love/Hate Hari Raya
I really hope that all my Muslim friends had their fair share of weight loss this Ramadan and as much as my elders like to say "It's so sad, Ramadan [month] is ending"... I was on the other side of the spectrum waiting in anticipation for the fasting month to finally end with a bang (not literally) so that I can FINALLY get back to my morning breakfast meals of bread and milk.
I detest Hari Raya.
No you didn't read it wrong.
Fattening dough fried in oil decored with Prawns - Wadeh
I thought it is supposed to be Vadai?
I wont' say I hate hate Hari Raya, but neither would I say that I have intense loving for crazy house visits to relatives that don't care about me. Either that OR they are more concerned about whose daughter is doing better in school and at work. Pui.
You visit a house, you eat, you shit, then you eat more kueh. After that you brag a little bit about the new Toyota you bought and no one bother asking you about your new blue Baju Kurung that took you pains to buy from the boutique in the bazaar and cost you $350 for 1 suit!
Baju Kebaya - I have 3 of these in my wardrobe and year after year, I am amazed that I still fit like a snug into each of them. Coming from a Javanese family, I wonder how come I am always the only one in the family that
dons the Baju Kebaya ( Indonesia's traditional costume)
Wait, ofcourse I didn't say it's a bad thing to go house visiting. In fact, I envy those of you who have a close knit family and does like 20 house visits on your first day of Raya! I only visit 2 house on 1st day heh.
And then when relatives heard that you are already working (even though I swear to them that I am still a student) they quipped at me and said that I no longer deserve green packets because I am already working.
Wah, so calculative?
Guess what, I am meeting all my relatives tomorrow and I really hope they will discuss something more intellectual like "What phone are you using? I'm using the iPhone 4 that comes with high retina display and A4 processor"
SIGH!
Nevertheless, I have good friends to perk up my moody Raya eve. I AM FORGOTTEN MUCH because I receive only 1 Hari Raya message! Not LOLing now.
Have a great weekend! I'll try to steal as many cornflakes kueh (my favourite) as I go house visiting to satisfy myself!
